University of Bristol

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Bristol is one of the world’s leading centres for the use of scientific and – more precisely – mathematical methods in philosophy. Several of its researchers work on Bayesian inference, expected utility theory, and epistemological applications of non-standard probability. The department is home to Richard Pettigrew, who will also be leading and managing the SAE network. Pettigrew’s strengths lie in the foundations of probabilistic belief representation (ERC project ‘Epistemic Utility Theory‘), the rationality of belief revision rules and the rational resolution of disagreement.
